Protecting Your Team’s Respiratory Health

Lung function screening is an important tool for detecting early signs of respiratory issues, especially in workers exposed to dust, chemicals, fumes, or other airborne hazards. At Health Check NZ, we provide on-site or clinic-based lung function testing to support healthy lungs, early intervention, and compliance with workplace health and safety regulations.

Under New Zealand workplace health and safety guidelines, lung function testing is recommended for employees who may be exposed to airborne particles or hazardous substances, helping employers meet their duty of care and maintain a safe, healthy working environment.

What is Lung Function Screening?

Also known as spirometry, this non-invasive assessment measures how effectively an individual can inhale and exhale. It is used to evaluate respiratory capacity and detect conditions such as:

  • Asthma

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Work-related lung changes (e.g. occupational asthma, dust-related decline)

Who Should Be Screened?

  • Workers in dusty, fume-heavy, or chemical environments

  • Employees in industries like construction, manufacturing, forestry, agriculture, or spray painting

  • As part of pre-employment or regular health monitoring programs

What’s Involved:

  • Health questionnaire to identify symptoms or risk factors

  • Spirometry test measuring lung volume, flow, and capacity

  • Results review with explanation and recommendations

  • Referral to GP or specialist if results indicate potential concern (with consent)

All testing is performed by trained health professionals using calibrated equipment in line with NZ Occupational Health Standards and Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) guidelines.

Benefits for Employers:

  • Early identification of occupational lung conditions

  • Fulfils obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015

  • Promotes a culture of health and safety

  • Helps with risk management and exposure control
